  • The second ledger

A wallet is a second ledger, with a rate of its own

A digital wallet does not remove the currency question from a casino deposit, it moves the question somewhere else and charges for the move. This page explains the two rates a wallet transaction can meet, why wallets are the method most often excluded from an entry offer, and what the closed loop means for a withdrawal.

Ad disclosure: the operator links on this page are affiliate links, and we are paid when a reader opens an account. It does not change which operators are listed, and it does not change the order, which is by licensing authority and then alphabetical. We publish no ratings and no bonus amounts. 19+.

The appeal of a wallet, and what it actually moves

A digital "wallet" (a balance held by a third company) solves a real problem, and the problem is not the exchange rate. It is the problem of handing banking credentials to a merchant (a number, stored somewhere, for as long as the merchant chooses): a wallet stands between the two, the merchant never sees an account number. The player uses one set of credentials across many sites instead of spreading them around.

That is worth something, and it is a different thing from being cheap. A wallet is a second "ledger" kept by a second company, with a balance, a currency and a rate of its own (published in a schedule, and rarely the best one available). Money that passes through it is money that has been through one more set of books than it needed to be.

The question a reader should ask is therefore not whether a wallet is better than a card but how many currency boundaries his money will cross on the way to the table. The answer can be zero, one or two, and the wallet decides which.

The usual objection, in its usual place

The buttons on this page are paid, the fact is marked under each one, and the brands below are ordered by licensing authority and then alphabetically, and a commission does not reach the rate card of a payment company, and the rate card is the subject here. We hold no accounts with any of the wallets described, and the fee schedules referred to are the ones those companies publish themselves. Where a figure depends on the particular operator we have not supplied one.

Counting the boundaries, which is the only arithmetic that matters

Start with the clean case, and it is the one worth aiming at. A wallet funded in Canadian dollars, paying a casino whose ledger is in Canadian dollars, crosses nothing at all, because the money stays in one currency from the bank to the table. The only charges are whatever the wallet takes for the transfer itself (a "fee" in its own schedule, flat or proportional), and now add one boundary.

A wallet funded in Canadian dollars paying a casino that keeps its ledger in another currency converts once, inside the casino, at the operator's own rate (which no "cashier" (the screen where money goes in and out) publishes), and the wallet saved nothing on the "conversion" (the step at which one currency becomes another) and did not cause it either, and the ledger did, and now add the second.

A wallet that holds a balance in another currency, funded from a Canadian card or account, converts on the way in at the wallet's rate and again inside the casino at the operator's rate, and two companies have now applied a "spread" (the difference between the two rates) to the same money, and the "spread" (the difference between the two rates) on the way out applies twice as well.

If you check only one thing, check which currency your own wallet balance is held in, because that single setting decides whether he is in the first case or the third.

The exclusion that is written in the terms and not at the cashier

The paragraph in a bonus's terms that lists "excluded payment methods" (the clause that decides whether an offer applies) is one of the most consequential paragraphs on any casino site (and one of the shortest), and it is also one of the "terms" nobody reads. Wallets appear in it more often than any other method, and the reason is structural rather than arbitrary.

An operator granting an offer wants to know that the money came from the person claiming it and that the payment cannot be withdrawn afterwards by a third party; a card gives it a verified cardholder and a bank transfer gives it a named account, while a wallet gives it only another wallet.

Operators compensate by excluding the method from the offer rather than by refusing the deposit, which is a commercial judgement and not a "security" measure, and the practical consequence is a sequence, and the sequence cannot be reversed.

A reader who intends to take an "entry offer" (what a casino hands a new account) should read the excluded methods list before choosing how to deposit, because the first deposit is the one the offer attaches to and no support desk will reattach it afterwards. There is a fourth charge that belongs to none of the three parties and catches readers who move money twice.

Your own wallet, if it holds a balance in one currency and receives a withdrawal in another converts on arrival, at its own rate, and the figure a reader compares against is the figure he sent rather than the figure the casino paid out.

The arithmetic is unforgiving on a round trip, because a margin of one and a half per cent (the figure the larger wallets publish for a currency pair that includes the Canadian dollar) applied four times is six per cent of the amount that travelled, and six per cent of a season's deposits is a larger number than any "entry offer" on this market!

What makes it worth checking rather than assuming is that the setting is usually a single field in the wallet's own account page, under a heading such as "base currency", and it can be changed before the first transaction and rarely afterwards.

We would set it to the currency of the casino account, or the casino account to the currency of the wallet, and we would do it in that order because the wallet is the easier of the two to change! Set it once, before the first deposit, and the arithmetic stops working against you.

The closed loop, and why a withdrawal goes back where it came from

Most operators state that a withdrawal returns by the route the deposit arrived on, and they describe the rule as an anti-money-laundering measure (the phrase appears in the terms) rather than a convenience, which means that a player who deposited by wallet receives his withdrawal into that wallet, and the money reaches a bank only on a second movement that he initiates himself; two things follow for a Canadian reader.

The first is a delay, because two movements take longer than one, and the second is a charge, because the wallet's own schedule for "withdrawing" to a bank account is usually its most expensive line (a flat fee, or a percentage with a floor); there is also a quieter consequence that matters more than either.

A balance sitting in a wallet is a balance that has not been spent and has not been banked, and money left one step from the "table" is money that is easier to return to the table. A reader who wants his winnings to be winnings should move them the whole way, in one movement rather than two. One ledger is enough. A second one charges rent.

What we could read about the brands here

We could not open the cashiers of the brands on the Games Global "platform" from outside Canada, because those sites decline requests from other countries. And we have not assumed that a "wallet" (a balance held by a third company) is supported where we could not see it listed; the index page carries that state brand by brand.

The one document we can attribute is the Alberta marketing guidance circulated by the operating company of the Casino Rewards group in October 2026, which names the payment methods that group offers its Canadian market. It does not name a wallet among them, and we report the absence as an absence in a document rather than as a fact about a "cashier". The reader's own check is faster than ours and more reliable.

Register, leave the balance at zero, open the "cashier", and read the list and the excluded methods paragraph side by side before any money moves.

    Questions readers ask

Does a wallet save me the exchange charge?

Only if the wallet holds Canadian dollars and the casino's ledger does too, which is the one case in which nothing crosses a boundary. If the wallet converts on the way in or the casino converts on arrival, the charge has simply moved to a different company's rate card.

Why are wallets excluded from so many offers?

Because an operator cannot reverse a wallet payment as easily as a card payment, and a method that cannot be reversed is a method that attracts the kind of player an offer was not designed for. The exclusion is published in the bonus terms rather than at the cashier.

Can I deposit with a wallet and withdraw to my bank?

Usually not. Most operators return a withdrawal by the route the deposit arrived on, which is a condition they state as a measure against money laundering, so a deposit by wallet means a withdrawal to the same wallet before the money reaches a bank.
