Two cookies, one of which only exists if you accept

The cookies this site actually writes, which are fewer than the usual list, and the services that write none at all. No advertising network has access to these pages.

The short version

This site writes one cookie before you have decided anything, and that cookie is the record of the decision itself (nothing more). And it writes a second set only if the decision was to accept, and those are the identifiers Google Analytics uses. And there is nothing else, because there is nothing else on the site that would need one.

That is a shorter list than most cookie pages carry, and the reason is structural rather than virtuous: we sell no advertising, so no advertising "network" has a script on these pages, and the great majority of the cookies you meet on the web belong to advertising networks (which is why most such pages are long).

The cookies that exist

`cdc_consent` holds the "choice" made on the banner, as either granted or denied, and it lasts a hundred and eighty-two days, which is written by this site, it is read by this site, and it goes nowhere. Without it the banner would ask the same question on every page, and `_ga` and `_ga_…` are written by Google Analytics, and only after the "accept" button has been pressed.

They distinguish one browser from another so that a "count" of readers is a count of readers rather than of page requests, and they are the standard Analytics identifiers rather than anything we have configured specially (no custom dimension holds a reader); nothing else is written by us, and if a reader finds a cookie on these pages that is not in those two groups, that is a defect and we would like to hear about it.

What refusing does, and what changing your mind does

Refusing means the "container" (the file Tag Manager loads everything else from) is never requested, so Analytics does not load and no identifier is created, and the site works identically. There is no part of it that depends on measurement. Changing a decision after accepting is the case worth describing, because deleting a cookie by hand does not stop measurement that is already running (the script stays in the page).

The link marked "cookie settings" (the link at the foot of every page here) at the foot of every page reopens the banner. Choosing to refuse at that point disables the Analytics property on the page, declares the refusal to Google's consent interface, deletes the identifiers already written and reloads the page without the container, and that sequence is stronger than clearing a cookie, which would leave the script in place!

A reader can also refuse at the level of the browser, and every browser offers a setting that blocks "third-party" (written by a company other than the one in the address bar) storage. And doing so has no effect on this site beyond the measurement, since nothing here is built on a cookie.

The service that writes nothing

The pages that carry operators ask a region service, Geo Targetly, which province or state a reader is in, so that a reader in Ontario or in Alberta receives the page written for his province (nineteen or eighteen, and a register). It is described at more length in the privacy policy, and it belongs here for one reason: with the settings in use it writes no cookie at all.

We verified that rather than asserting it, by looking at the browser's own storage after a redirect had actually happened; the settings that produce the result are a "cookie time" (the setting that decides whether anything is stored at all) of zero and no "frequency cap", and if either of them changed this paragraph would have to change with it. One exception exists and it is worth recording for completeness.

A search engine's "crawler" (the program a search engine sends instead of a reader) is recognised by its own name and passed through without a redirect. And that pass carries a cookie which expires at the moment it is written, and no reader ever receives it.

Why there is no advertising here

It would be easy to earn a "second income" from these pages by selling "display" advertising, and we do not, for a reason that has more to do with the subject than with taste. An advertising network decides what you see, and on a site about gambling that means a network deciding which gambling is advertised to somebody who has arrived looking for information about gambling.

The commercial relationship we do have is the one declared at the top of every list: the operator links are paid, they carry the attribute a search engine reads ("sponsored", in the markup), and the order of the lists is the licensing authority and then the alphabet. A reader can see the whole of our commercial interest on the page, which is not something a page carrying a network's advertising can offer.
